#MusicMonday: Rasmee Isan Soul

Louie Ackelsberg, 128 YinD

This week’s #MusicMonday comes from contemporary Isaan soul singer, Rasmee. Originally from Ubon Ratchathani, Rasmee got her start singing traditional Molam music. After moving to Chiang Mai, the singer began to incorporate blues, jazz, soul and West African rhythms into her music. She describes her voice as having a vibrational sound (sǐiang-sàn, เสียงสั่น) common among Molam singers. Some of her influences include Nina Simone, Oumou Sangare, and Noora Noor. Take a listen to her track Mueang Chut Dam (เมืองชุดดำ).

n’Joy!

To learn more about Rasmee, check out this video (with English subtitles) where she talks about Isan music and the inspiration behind her songs.
