The Great Train Excursion
Ride the train all the way from Vladivostok, Russia to Lisbon, Portugal. It would take about 10 days of actually being on a train if I didn’t get off anywhere (but of course I would). I would ride the entirety of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the trip goes through Belarus, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France, and Spain before terminating in Lisbon, all on trains. Minsk, Paris, Barcelona, and Prague are among the major cities the route passes through. If one wished to continue the journey (and one does because one is me and one is engaged in a hypothetical exercise), one could fly to Toronto and take the train across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver, B.C., about a 5 day journey through national parks and the Rockies.
Rome2Rio thinks the trip would cost anywhere from ฿26,000 to ฿47,000 for the tickets alone, which actually isn’t bad for about 15 days of travel on trains plus an 8-hour plane ride. The real cost would be feeding and housing yourself in the dozens of cities where you stay. But think of all the things you would see and the people you would meet!
It’ll never happen, but it’s certainly fun to think about.
